In a recent study conducted by Dutch scientists, electronic communication between doctors and patients has turned out to yield more positive health effects. The various mediums of electronic communication reviewed in the study included email, messages, patient-facing EHR etc. Scientists concluded that using effective communication between patient and doctor significantly affects care outcomes, health behavior, and patient satisfaction. In the paper, recently published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research, researchers looked particularly at studies focused on chronically ill patients.
Authors Catharina Carolina de Jong, Wynand JG Ros, and Guus Schrijvers wrote, “Asynchronous communication is used by patients and it helps to increase the effects on health behavior and health outcomes, at least for some. Patients seem to be interested in using email and understand how to use it. They use email for questions about biomedical concerns, medication, and test results, as well as to inform the providers about non-urgent health issues. A study supported by U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs found that patients are embracing the concept of patient portals but the awareness among patients about the benefits of portals is rather low. There has been a rise in the usage of portals by patients to access and manage their health records but they are still unknown whether the portals actually improve outcomes, increase patient satisfaction or create efficiencies. The researchers reviewed 46 different patient portals connected to EHRs. The results from the portals were not as commendable as they had expected. The evidences were mixed as to whether the tools improved outcomes and satisfaction. The researchers also found that the effect on utilization and efficiencies of portals also was “unclear” to patients. A survey conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) – Social media “likes” healthcare – reveals that half of the health industry executives are focusing on ways to harness the power of social media into measurable business outcomes. Due to the Affordable Care Act, many providers have made the shifted toward scalability in the healthcare industry.
According to the survey, one of the major concerns among C-suite health executives was to find innovative ways to integrate social media and to use it to deliver better care and enhance patient engagement while complying to new provisions in the Affordable Care Act, such as Medicare’s Value Based Purchasing and accountable care.

A new study suggests that by 2017, the U.S. patient portal business is expected to reach $898.4 million from a mere $279 million in 2012 – representing a staggering 221 percent growth.
A new analysis “U.S. Patient Portal Market for Hospitals and Physicians: Overview and Outlook, 2012–2017” by Frost and Sullivan suggests that there will be an exponential growth witnessed in the patient portal segment, largely driven by regulatory factors such as the need to meet stage 2 meaningful use requirements. Other factors would include the growing move to clinical integration, Accountable care, and increasing consumer demand for health information technology.
According the study, around 50 percent of U.S. hospitals and 40 percent of U.S. physicians have some kind of patient portal technology which they use in conjunction with their electronic health record system. Continue reading →
We have heard about Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) moving data from patient side to providers but the reverse action has rarely been attempted – until recently.
Not including patients in the Health Information Exchange table is understood but that defeats the whole purpose of patient engagement.
